iPhone 5 Cases Again Show Style Redesign

iPhone 5 case
The new iPhone 5 cases are available from Shenzhen manufacturer, based in China. Available in some designs and colors, they again suggest that Apple is planning a redesign for its anticipated next generation iPhone.

Like third-party cases that began to crop up in China in July, the latest designs appear to show a mute switch that has been moved to the right side of the device. On the iPhone 4 and all previous versions of Apple's smartphone, the mute switch has been located on the left side, above the volume buttons.

The cases also show curved sides on the iPhone, in a design much like the iPad 2. Those sides level off to a flat back that can be stable when placed on a table.

The new iPhone 5 cases also show volume buttons that are more akin to those on the iPhone 3GS and its predecessors with an elongated shape. On the iPhone 4, Apple adopted metal, circular volume buttons, while the longer buttons remained on last year's fourth-generation iPod touch.

In fact, the alleged design of the new iPhone has many traits in common with last year's iPod touch, including the volume buttons and curved sides. But the new cases also clearly show a headphone jack on top, as well as the moved mute switch, which are features currently only found on the iPhone, as well as the iPad.

The cases stand in contrast to numerous reports which have indicated the next iPhone will closely resemble the currently available iPhone 4. In addition, a number of leaked components have shown a next-generation handset with the same size and shape as the iPhone 4.

But still other rumors have suggested the next iPhone will be a "major redesign," lending support to the cases that have proliferated in China. That has led to some speculation that the other, iPhone 4-like components might be for a new low-end iPhone 4 intended to replace the iPhone 3GS, which sells for $49 with a new two-year service contract.

The New Amazon Kindle Tablet Is A Very Real Threat To iPad

The rumors are true. Amazon is working on a tablet computer—currently called the Kindle Tablet—that will be released later this year. After months of speculation, Tech Crunch got an up-close-and-personal look at the Android-powered device that Amazon has created with the goal of competing with the Apple iPad 2, the BlackBerry PlayBook, and a host of other tablet computers in mind.

But, can the Kindle Tablet really compete with the big boys? In a word: Yes. After reading through the Tech Crunch report, it appears that Amazon has put a lot of time, thought, and effort into making the Kindle Tablet a serious contender in the tablet space. To help you see why, we pulled out the five reasons that we think the Kindle Tablet will make an immediate impact. If you’ve started to put together your Christmas list already, make sure this thing lands on it ASAP.

1. The Kindle Tablet is slated to cost just $250.
Now, we know what you’re thinking: If it only costs 250 bucks, then it can’t possibly do all the things that the iPad can do! Not true. There are some features you’ll get with the iPad that you won’t get with the Kindle Tablet—for instance, Amazon hasn’t found a service provider that’ll allow you to connect to a 3G network with the Kindle Tablet yet—but, for the most part, you’ll be able to do most of the things you can do on your iPad now with the Kindle Tablet for at least half the price.

2. It will feature an Android operating system that will be completely unique to the Kindle Tablet.
Rather than just offer an Android OS like “Honeycomb” or “Ice Cream Sandwich” that you’ve seen before, Amazon has worked with Android to create an OS that is like nothing you’ve ever experienced. It won’t be anything like the Android OS that you use with your smart phone or one of the operating systems that’s being used on other tablet computers right now. Tech Crunch also pointed out that the interface is easy to use and a sight to see.

3. It will encourage users to utilize Amazon’s cloud services.
Sometime soon, all tablet computers—and all computers in general—will rely on cloud services rather than bulky hard drives to store music, videos, and more. The Kindle Tablet is poised to be one of the first devices to force users to do it. That’s because the Kindle Tablet will reportedly only have about 6GB of storage on it. That’s remarkably small for a tablet, but it’s large when you consider that the Kindle Tablet will come preloaded with Amazon’s Cloud Player for music and Amazon’s Instant Video Player for movies. It means you’ll need a much smaller hard drive for your tablet, which is part of the reason Amazon is able to keep the price of the Kindle Tablet so low.

4. It will reportedly come with a free subscription to Amazon Prime.
The Amazon Prime service—which normally costs $79—gives Amazon shoppers advantages like free two-day shipping and no minimum purchases for free shipping. When you buy the Kindle Tablet, Tech Crunch says the plan is to give away a free subscription to Amazon Prime. So if you’re a frequent Amazon shopper, you’re basically getting a very useful service for free when you buy the Kindle Tablet.

5. Did we mention that it only costs $250?
Listen, we could go on and on and on listing the specs of the Kindle Tablet. But we’ll let you go to Tech Crunch to read about all of the bells and whistles that’ll come standard in the Kindle Tablet. All we care about is that someone has finally figured out a way to create a cool tablet for less than 500 bucks. At $250, the Kindle Tablet is worth the price of admission and we can pretty much guarantee that you’ll find one of these in our hands when it drops later this year. Sorry, Apple, but Amazon’s got the right idea here. And you’ve finally got some very real competition on your hands. We can’t wait to see how it plays out.

No Verizon for Samsung Galaxy S II

Samsung Electronics Co. will introduce its Galaxy S II smartphone next week—considered its best shot at cutting into the iPhone's market-share dominance—but the company will have to do it without the biggest U.S. wireless carrier: Verizon Wireless.

At an event Monday at New York's Time Warner Center, Samsung will announce it is selling the device starting in September on AT&T Inc., Sprint Nextel Corp. and T-Mobile USA's networks, according to people familiar with the plans, but Verizon Wireless said it won't offer the device.
Many of us were holding out hopes that the Function, Verizon's rumored variant of the Samsung Galaxy S II, would be the latest addition to its LTE lineup, but now we're hearing that it may not be coming to the carrier at all. According to the Wall Street Journal, it appears quite likely that Big Red won't be involved in Samsung's anticipated launch event this coming Monday. The publication cites people familiar with the plans, who also mentioned that we should still expect to see the Galaxy S II make its way to Sprint, T-Mobile and AT&T at the very least. Now here's some possible relief to the sting you may have just felt: BGR is now reporting that while this is all true, Verizon has a Samsung phone in the works that will have "nearly identical specs" to that of the GSII. We're still awaiting official confirmation from Verizon on the matter and will update when we receive word.

Verizon Wireless is passing on the Samsung Galaxy S II smartphone according to a report in The Wall Street Journal on Thursday. BGR has confirmed with multiple trusted sources that this is accurate — Samsung will not unveil a Verizon-branded GALAXY S II smartphone next week at its New York City launch event on August 29th. Instead, Samsung will take the wraps off of GALAXY S II handsets that will soon launch on T-Mobile, Sprint and AT&T. We’re told two of those carriers will maintain the “GALAXY S II” branding but one may offer a unique name for the handset. BGR has also confirmed, however, that Verizon Wireless will soon launch a Samsung device with very similar specifications — as in, nearly identical specifications — but it just won’t be a “GALAXY S II” phone. Perhaps it will be a new DROID device, a possible successor to the Samsung DROID Charge, or perhaps it will be something else entirely. In either case, Verizon Wireless subscribers certainly should not be worried when they don’t see an S II announced for the nation’s No. 1 carrier on Monday.

Update: We just heard from a Verizon spokesperson who confirmed the carrier will not be carrying the device, and offered the following quote: "We have a robust portfolio of devices that offer customers exciting options including the Droid Charge by Samsung which runs on Verizon Wireless' 4G LTE network."

Steve Jobs Resigns As CEO of Apple

In news breaking just minutes ago, Apple has announced that Steve Jobs, one of Android’s main detractors, has resigned from his position as CEO of the company. Tim Cook, Apple’s Chief Operating Officer, has been named the Cuprtino-based tech giant’s new CEO. Jobs will remain part of the company, assuming the role of Chairman of the Board. In a statement released by Apple’s Board, Art Levinson said:

"Steve’s extraordinary vision and leadership saved Apple and guided it to its position as the world’s most innovative and valuable technology company. Steve has made countless contributions to Apple’s success, and he has attracted and inspired Apple’s immensely creative employees and world class executive team. In his new role as Chairman of the Board, Steve will continue to serve Apple with his unique insights, creativity and inspiration. The Board has complete confidence that Tim is the right person to be our next CEO. Tim’s 13 years of service to Apple have been marked by outstanding performance, and he has demonstrated remarkable talent and sound judgment in everything he does."

Jobs will no doubt still play a large role in Apple’s operations, with the move being similar to one recently undertaken at Google that saw Eric Schmidt’s duties shifted from CEO to Executive Chairman. Jobs’ history of illness likely was a large factor in the restructuring of Apple’s higher brass. His new position will likely come with a reduced workload.

Let there be no question: ours would be a very different industry, were it not for Steve Jobs. Few, if any individuals have had so profound an effect on their given spaces; a unprecedented track record that began in 1976 with the co-founding of Apple. In earliest incarnation, the company would prove the driving force of the personal computer explosion of the early '80s, beginning with the Apple II -- one of the industry's first hugely popular microcomputers. The Macintosh shook things up yet again, a launch celebrated by the debut of the "1984" ad during that year's Superbowl. That line helped break both the graphical user interface and the mouse to a massive audience.

Soon after, Jobs would resign, going on to form NeXT. The company never managed sales figures anywhere near the previous endeavor, but its products would prove highly influential, forming, among other things, the basis of Apple's paradigm-shifting OS X operating system. While Steve Jobs was focused on NeXT and The Graphic Group -- the company that would later morph into the far more familiar Pixar -- Apple suffered a series of defeats.

Jobs returned to the company first as an advisor, then interim CEO, finally reclaiming his role as the head of the company. In 1998, the company reimagined desktop computing yet again with the iMac. In 2001, the company unveiled the first Apple Store and debuted the iPod and iTunes that same year, drastically altering the state of the music industry.

In 2007, the company debuted the iPhone, before it gave the world the App Store a year later. Smartphones existed before Apple, sure, but since the introduction of the iPhone, they've never been the same. And after years of rumors, 2010 saw the debut of the iPad, a device that did the unimaginable, making the tablet a viable and indeed thriving consumer device.

Over the years, Jobs have proven an enigmatic and sometimes polarizing figure in this industry, but whatever words one might immediately leap upon to describe the black turtlenecked CEO, his impact can never be denied. And the aftershocks will no doubt be felt for decades to come. We knew that this day would come, but we were nonetheless taken by surprise when Jobs announced that he would be resigning his post at the head of the company, stepping aside for Apple COO Tim Cook.

We've gathered some of the biggest pieces of Jobs news to happen since the founding of our own site in 2004, not to bemoan the exit of Jobs, but rather to celebrate the presence of a figure who truly is larger than life.

China Overtakes US in PC Sales For First Time

We may be living in a "post PC" world according to some, but PCs are unquestionably still big business, and they're now a bigger business in China than anywhere else. That's according to the latest report from market research firm IDC, at least, which found that both PC sales and shipments in China inched ahead of those in the US for the second quarter -- the first time that's ever happened, and earlier than IDC had previously projected. In terms of hard numbers, that translates to sales of $11.9 billion in China (compared to $11.7 billion in the US), and shipments of 18.5 million units, which represents a 14.3 percent jump year-over-year (as opposed to a 4.9 percent drop to 17.7 million units in the US). Not surprisingly, Lenovo is the big winner in all of this -- it's both the top PC maker in China and the fastest growing one, with a market share just shy of 32 percent.

China overtook the U.S. in both PC sales and shipments in the second quarter, according to research firm IDC.
China's PC sales reached US$11.9 billion, while U.S. PC sales fell behind to $11.7 billion. For shipments, China saw a 14.3 percent increase to 18.5 million units year-over-year. But in the U.S., PC shipments dropped by 4.9 percent to 17.7 million units.
It's the first time China has overtaken the U.S. in shipments and sales. "We weren't expecting this to happen in this quarter," said Bryan Ma, an associate vice president with IDC. Previous projections had expected China to take the lead some time in 2012.
However, China saw more enterprise PC purchases than expected from the public sector in the second quarter, while U.S. PC purchases were dragged down by economic conditions and tablet sales, Ma said.
U.S. PC sales are expected to pick up and surpass China in the fourth quarter because of the U.S. holiday buying season -- but during the full year of 2012 and onward, China will retake the position as the biggest PC market for both sales and shipments, Ma added.
Worldwide, PC shipments have grown at a slower pace because of softening consumer demand and rising interest in tablets, according to IDC. China, however, continues to see more rapid growth, partly simulated by Chinese government infrastructure projects and consumer outreach programs to replace older PCs, Ma said.
The country's growing market bodes well for Chinese PC maker Lenovo, which is the fastest growing company among the top five PC vendors, according to IDC. Lenovo is the largest PC maker in China with a 31.7 percent share of the market.

Android Market Updated With Google+ Button

Yet another Android Market update has begun to arrive on Android phones and Android tablets. It’s nothing as drastic as the complete overhaul we saw just a few weeks back, but it does add in some desirable features. For starters, the +1 button that has been featured on the Android Market’s web iteration has made the journey over to the mobile world, allowing you to share all of your favorite apps with your Google+ circles. The second most notable enhancement is the option to PIN lock the Market, preventing easy access to your shopping credentials and insuring you are the only capable of downloading new apps. The new additions are rolling out to handsets now, but for those lacking in patience and with a bit of search engine knowledge and installable APK shouldn’t be too hard to find.

Android still king of the US smartphone Market

In other obvious news, Android phones and iPhone continue to sit pretty atop the US smartphone market, according to a recent NPD study. The current titans of the smartphone industry both saw their pieces of the OS pie increase in Q2 of 2011, putting Andy Rubin's green robot in the lead with 52 percent and Apple at 29 percent. Newly adopted webOS, and Microsoft's WP7 and Windows Mobile all managed to cling to their respective 5 percent shares with no yearly change, leaving only BlackBerry OS to experience an 11 percent decline. But the real meat and potatoes of the report focuses on Google's soon-to-be in-house partner: Motorola. Despite the rosy picture painted by recent acquisition talks, the company appears to be facing tough competition from Android OEM rivals, and the wireless market as a whole. In regard to overall mobile phone share (read: dumbphones, et al.) and smartphone-only, Moto saw a 3 percent year-to-year decline, with its biggest loss coming from Android unit sales -- a 50 percent drop to 22 percent of the market. Will the rosy glow of Mountain View "help inspire new paths to differentiation" for Moto, or are we just looking at a repeat of the "RAZR era?" While you ponder these pressing questions, head past the break to read the full report.

While Apple owns the largest share of handset shipments and profits among the world’s top smartphone vendors, Android is still the No. 1 smartphone operating system on the planet by a wide margin. Market research firm Canalys on Monday released its second-quarter smartphone figures, reaffirming impressive growth across the global smartphone industry. The firm says the worldwide smartphone market grew 73% year-over-year to more than 107.7 million units shipped last quarter, and Android lead the market in 35 of the 56 countries Canalys tracks. According to the firm’s estimates, Android shipments in the second quarter ballooned 379% over the same quarter last year to 51.9 million units. This impressive growth helped Android gain 48% of global smartphone shipments in the quarter. With 20.3 million iOS smartphones shipped in the June quarter, Apple’s mobile OS topped Symbian to steal the No. 2 spot with a 19% share of the global market. BlackBerry shipments grew 11% in Q2 though RIM’s global share slid, and Microsoft, still waiting for Nokia to launch its first batch of Windows Phones, shipped fewer than 1.5 million devices last quarter to take just 1% of the market — down 52% year-over-year. Canalys also notes that Apple was the top smartphone vendor in the second quarter, while Samsung grew 421% year-over-year to take the No. 2 spot with 17 million smartphones shipped. Canalys’ full press release follows below.

Another news, Sprint Nextel Corp. will begin selling the new version of the Apple iPhone 5 in mid-Octobe, and Samsung Nexus Prime also will come in Octorber. It will be big thing for smartphones buyer. At some store, the iPhone 5 screen protector is on sale now.

Rumors: Android Ice Cream Sandwich Phones Launching as early as October

According to the lastest report coming out of BGR, a source has claimed that Google will bump up the ship date of Android’s next generation and its accompanying Phones in an effort to better combat the release of the iPhone 5. We could see Android Ice Cream Sandwich Phones as early as October, creating an appealing option for owners of the first Motorola Droid with two-year contracts conveniently up for renewal around the same time. One of the first devices to run the next iteration of Android could be a next-gen Nexus model, though all is merely rumors and speculation at this point.
As the former report, The first Ice Cream Sandwich-powered device is expected to be Google’s Nexus Prime. At present nothing has been officially confirmed by Google. But we’ve heard rumours of a Super AMOLED HD (720p) display and an OMAP4460 processor.
Ice Cream Sandwich will be the next major version of Android for smartphones, and will be classed as version 4.0. It was officially announced by Google themselves at this year’s I/O developer conference. Google confirmed that Ice Cream Sandwich will be a mixture of Gingerbread and Honeycomb – an OS designed for use on all platforms.
